Paralysis is a loss of muscle function in part of our body. It can be localized or generalized, partial or complete, and temporary or permanent. Paralysis can affect any part of our body at any time in our life. If one experience it, one probably will not feel pain in the affected areas.

Paralysis occurs when someone is unable to make voluntary muscle movements. A nervous system problem causes paralysis. Uninjured nerves send signals to muscles. Those signals make muscles move. Someone having paralysis, canot move certain parts of the body.Uploaded Image


The main symptom of paralysis is the inability to move part of our body, or not being able to move at all.

It can start suddenly or gradually. Sometimes it comes and goes.

Paralysis can affect any part of the body, including:

  • Face
  • Hands
  • One arm or leg (monoplegia)
  • One side of the body (hemiplegia)
  • Both legs (paraplegia)
  • Both arms and legs (tetraplegia or quadriplegia)

The affected part of your body may also be:

  • Stiff (spastic paralysis), with occasional muscle spasms
  • Floppy (flaccid paralysis)
  • Numbness, painful or tingling


Some of the main causes of paralysis are:

  • a stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA or "mini-stroke")
  •  Bell's palsy
  •  Sleep paralysis
  • Severe head injury or spinal cord (back) injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Myasthenia gravis or hypokalaemia periodic paralysis


Other causes of paralysis include:

  • Brain tumour
  • Hereditary spastic paraplegia, Friedreich's ataxia or muscular dystrophy
  • Motor neurone disease, spinal muscular atrophy or Lambert-Eaton mysathenic syndrome
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome palsy, spina bifida or spinal muscular atrophy
  • Lyme disease
  • Post-polio syndrome
  • Tumour on a nerve, Melanoma skin cancer or Head and neck cancer


  •  X-rays,
  •  CT scans,
  •  MRI scans, or other imaging studies.
  • If there is spinal cord injury, Myelography is to be done.

CAUSTICUM : Especially adapted to paralysis of single parts of the body.Useful for facial paralysis from exposure to dry,cold weather including paralysis of the right side of the face, tongue, pharynx etc.Also useful for vocal paralysis associated with weakness of vocal cords and paralysis of muscles of deglutition of the tongue, eyelids, face, bladder and extremities.

LATHYRUS : Very useful for spastic paralysis, infantile paralysis and paralysis which affects the lower extremities associated with heaviness, much weakness and slow process recovery of nerve power. Also there is rheumatic paralysis.There is tendency for excessive rigidity of the legs with inability to extend or cross legs while sitting.Given when patient can easily sit or bend forwards, but straightens up with much difficulty.

ALUMINA : Useful for paralysis of the lower extremities, especially of spinal origin. There is heaviness in leg that the patient can scarcely drag them.Also there is weariness even while sitting.

DULCAMARA : Mostly recommended when condition are worse from cold damp weather, or by sudden changes from hot to cold weather.There is paralysis of tongue with impaired speech.Useful for paresis and hyperaemia of spinal cord from lying on damp cold weather

CONIUM : Useful for paralysis caused due to suppressed sexual desire in widows, widowers and bachelors; There is gradually progressing, ascending paralysis, ending in death by failure of respiration.There is painless paralytic conditions.Also there is paralytic weakness of hips and legs resulting in difficult gait.Useful for trembling and loss of strength while walking with weakness of muscles of face, upper lids etc.

ARNICA : Useful for paralysis due to concussion,cerebrovascular accident especially cerebral thrombosis.Given in case of hemiplagia due to cerebral thrombosis in case of hypertension.Helpful in controlling haemorrhage and aids absorption.There is sore bruised feeling, everything on which patient lies seems hard.Very uiseful for left sided paralysis, pulse full and strong, singing and muttering.

SILICEA : Useful for paralysis from defective nutrition of nervous system, with over susceptibility to nervous stimuli.

PLUMBUM MET : Paralysis of single muscles; it generally begins in the extensors. Wrist drop is prominent. Patient is unable to lift anything with the hand.

ZINCUM MET : Useful for slow developing descending paralysis.There is numbess of the part wirh unsteady gait.

CEROLIN : Effective or Brain
