 PSORIASIS

-A condition in which skin cells build up and form scales and itchy , dry patches. Psoriasis is thought to be an immune system problem, triggers include infection, stress and cold .

Symptioms of psoriasis include trick areas of discolored skin covered with scales. These thick scaly areas are called plaques .

TYPES

There are several types of psoriasis including:-

PLAQUE PSORIASIS- Plaque psoriasis is the most  common type of psoriasis . About 80 to 90 percent of people with psoriasis have plaque psoriasis .

INVERSE PSORIASIS- This type appears in our skin folds . It causes thin plaques without scales.

GUTTATE PSORIASIS- Guttate psoriasis may appear after a sore throat caused by a streptococcal infection . It looks like small , red, deap-shaped scaly . spots and often affects children and young adults.

ERYTHRODERIC PSORIASIS- This is a severe type of psoriasis that affects a large area of our skin . It causes widespread skin discoloration and skin shedding .

NAIL PSORIASIS- Nail psorasis causes skin discoloration , pitting and changes to our fingernails and toenails

WHAT PART OF OUR BODY WILL AFFECT :-

Psoriasis is common on our - Elbows and knees

                                             -face and inside of our mouth

                                             -scalp

                                              -fingernails and toenails

                                               -genitals

                                               -lower back

                                               -palms and feet

SYMPTOMS

-Itchy skin

-Cracked , dry skin

-Nails that are pitted , cracked or crumbly

-Joint pain

If we scratch our plaque we could break open our skin which could lead to an infection. infection are dangerous.

CAUSES

An over reactive immune system that creats inflammation in our skin causes psoriasis. if we have psoriasis our immune system is supposed to destroy foreign invaders , like bacteria to keep we healthy and prevent us from getting sick .

As a result our immune system creates inflammation or swelling which we see on the surface of our skin as skin plaque.

DIAGNOSIS

A healthcare provider or a dermatologist will diagnose psorasis after a physical exam to look at our skin andour symptoms . they will ask us question that could include :-

-Do you have a history of skin conditions in your biological family ?

-When did you first notice symptoms ?

-Have you tried any at home remedies to treat your skin ?

-What types of soap or shampoos do you use ?

The appearance of a skin plaque leads to a psoriasis diagnosis but symptoms can relate to other similar skin condition . So our provider might offer a skin biopsy test to confirm our diagnosis .

TREATMENT

Several treatment options can relieve psoriasis symptoms . Common psoriasis treatments include :-

-steroid creams

-Moisturizers for dry skin .

-Medication to slow skin cell production.

-Medicated lotion or shampoos.

-Vitamin D3 ointment.

Creams or ointment may be enough to improve the rash small areas of our skin . If our rash affects larger areas or if we also have joint pain we will need other treatment .

WHAT IF COMMON PSORIASIS TREATMENTS DON'T WORK ?

If our symptoms of psoriasis don't improve after treatment or if we have large areas of involvement . our helth provider may recommend the following treatments :-

-Light therapy

-Immune therapies

Before starting trreatment taalk to ou health care provider about the side effects and mention any medication or supplements we currently take to avoid drug intraction.

PREVENT

There is no a way to entirely prevent psoriasis . we can reduce our risk by following our health care provider's treatment living a healthy lifestyle  taking good care of our skin and avoiding triggers that can cause an outbreak of symptoms.

TAKE CARE OF OUR SELF

To feel our best with psoriasis

-Take medications as instructed .

-Use moisturizer regularly especially after bathing .

-Avoid harsh soaps.

-Use medicated shampoo for scales on our scalp.
